Terminal A East Security Checkpoint

When international Terminal A West was completed, the existing Terminal A East security checkpoint had to be enlarged to accommodate both passengers originating in Philadelphia and international recheck passengers connecting with domestic flights. The multi-phased project required the original checkpoint to remain operational while being temporarily enlarged to meet passenger screening demands. The new design opens up the enlarged checkpoint to natural light and views of the airport beyond; this transparency supports security functions and assists in travelers' orientation. During the project the design was frequently revised to meet developing post 9/11 TSA requirements. To ensure security, the new checkpoint was built and opened in phases.
