West Philadelphia High School: Start to Finish
The new West Philadelphia High School at 49th and Chestnut Streets is nearing completion as the September opening approaches. Big changes are taking place. Kathryn Babcock RA Adds to Historic Preservation Expertise

This winter and spring Kathryn Babcock RA travels to New York City once a week to attend a masonry restoration course on how to analyze and resolve complex conservation, restoration and maintenance problems.  The course is sponsored by RESTORE, a not-for-profit educational corporation that since 1976 has offered a range of programs and services related to the technology of building conservation. 

 
Murals Screen City Hall Courtyard Construction
Grand murals designed by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program screen construction and provide safe passageways for pedestrians walking through Philadelphia City Hall courtyard. Architect Robert Glick RA  assisted Mural Arts artist Eric Okdeh, providing photographs for the 600-foot long mesh screen on the south courtyard that illustrates the many skilled trades at work on the City Hall project. The mural in the north courtyard is a solid surface, painted off-site and installed in sections. The courtyard construction is the final phase of the Exterior Envelope Restoration.
 
Cheyney University Student Housing
Kelly/Maiello is the associate architect working with RMJM on new student housing for Cheyney University that will accommodate 400 students. Design is complete and the project, now in bidding, is scheduled for completion in August 2011.

 
Family Court Restoration Featured at AIA Preservation Committee
Associate Jim Karmolinski AIA presented Kelly/Maiello's restoration work on the Philadelphia Family Court building to AIA Philadelphia's Preservation Committee. Kelly/Maiello was responsible for the Master Plan and phased renovations to the neoclassical building on the Parkway. Two phases of restoration to the interior spaces had been completed in 2001 when work stopped. The building is now being considered for other uses.
 
City Hall Restoration Amazes CSI Visitors on Design Team's Technical Tour
Robert Glick RA, LEED AP, Project Manager for the Philadelphia City Hall Exterior Restoration Project, joined other members of the design team to conduct a tour of the project for delegates to the Construction Specifications Institute convention in May. Participating with Bob on the tour were Stephen McLaughlin, SMRC; Carl Baumert, Keast and Hood Consulting Engineers; Marianna Thomas, Marianna Thomas Architects and Nan Gutterman, Vitetta.
 
Congratulations!
Kelly/Maiello congratulates Michael Solonoski on receiving his Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Drexel University.  Michael has been an intern with us since January 2007 while completing his studies at Drexel. Somehow he has also found the time to train and compete in national and international figure skating competitions and qualify for the U.S. National Figure Skating competition prior to the Vancouver Olympics.
 
Construction Underway for West Philadelphia Replacement High School
Construction has begun on The New West Philadelphia Replacement High school. Excavation and placement of concrete footings and foundation walls is well on its way despite the harsh winter conditions.  Construction is to be completed by Spring of 2011.
 
The President House is Making the News Again
The Philadelphia Inquirer recently ran a two-part story on Sunday and Monday (2/21, 2/22/2010) that focused on Hercules, one of the enslaved workers who resided in the President’s House as George Washington’s chef. Craig Leban, the Inquirer's restaurant critic, wrote an in-depth story of President George Washington’s chief cook that also tells the history of our nation through food. 2009 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award
The Philadelphia City Hall Exterior Envelope Restoration project has received a 2009 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award from Preservation Pennsylvania in Partnership with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Vincent Maiello and Robert Glick RA accepted the award for Kelly/Maiello at the Award Ceremony.

John Frederick Harbeson Award
AIA Philadelphia presented Emanuel Kelly, FAIA with the John Frederick Harbeson Award at the Design Awards Ceremony October 14, 2009. This award is presented annually to a long standing member of the architectural community to recognize significant contributions over a lifetime to the architectural profession and its related disciplines. The recipient of this award is recognized for contributions to the architectural profession, the American Institute of Architects, the education of the architectural community, and contributions to the Philadelphia community at large.
 
Philadelphia City Hall Wins Grand Jury Award
The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia awarded Philadelphia City Hall Exterior Envelope Restoration with a 2009 Grand Jury Award for Historic Preservation. Kelly/Maiello led the extensive project design team.

President's House: Freedom and Slavery in Making a New Nation is under construction at the Independence National Park.
 
Philadelphia Museum of Art
Kelly/Maiello is working as Historic Preservation Architect for Gehry Partners on its proposed expansion and renovation of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In addition, Kelly/Maiello is providing PMA with various professional consulting services in support of the expansion and renovation program, including providing architectural and engineering services for a variety of preparatory enabling projects which will clear the path for the upcoming phased expansion. Among these are temporary accessibility provisions and new spaces for Education and school groups. Project Architect Kathryn Babcock R.A. brings her extensive historic preservation experience to the PMA projects.
 
The American Association of Museums
Emanuel Kelly FAIA, project director for The President’s House commemorative exhibit, participated in a panel discussion at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Association of Museums in Philadelphia. The session entitled, “Telling the Liberty Story in Philadelphia,” also included Romona Riscoe Benson, President of the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Michael Coard, Esq., member of the project’s Oversight Committee, Joseph Nicholson, project exhibit designer, and Richard Rabinowitz, project historian and interpretive planner.
 
The Fattah Stimulus Conference
“Getting Government Contracts for Small Business” was the subject of the conference sponsored by Congressman Chaka Fattah that Troy C. Leonard AIA and Alexis Johnson recently attended. Congressman Fattah and Pennsylvania Chief Stimulus Implementation Officer James Creedon explained how stimulus funding will be distributed in the state. Representatives from the U. S. Small Business Association, General Service Association, PA Department of General Services and other agencies gave instructions to Small Business owners and Disadvantaged businesses looking to do business with the government.
 
LEED
Michael Wittich, AIA, LEED AP, is the new LEED consultant for the Philadelphia International Airport. Mike will be responsible for making sure all new projects at the airport will meet the criteria for LEED Certification.
 
Multi Family Housing Access Forum
James Karmolinski, AIA and Michael Wittich, AIA, LEED AP, attended the recent Multi Family Housing Access Forum in Philadelphia. The forum, sponsored by the U.S Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, was to assist developers, architects, and others understand the accessibility requirements of the Federal Fair Housing Act , and to assist developers of multi-family housing and persons with disabilities and their advocates.
 
President's House: Freedom and Slavery in Making a New Nation Update

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Chief of Staff Clarence Armbrister and the Oversight Committee attended the Kick-Off Meeting in City Hall, May 19, 2008, for the restart of the President’s House project. An increased project budget includes the design for a glass enclosure through which visitors can view the archaeological fragments that were discovered in the summer 2007.
 
President's House: Freedom and Slavery in Making a New Nation Update
The Delaware Regional Port Authority voted Wednesday, February, 2009 to award $3.5 million to complete construction on the President’s House project by fall 2010. Securing this funding allows Kelly/Maiello to move forward in making this project a reality. Free Library of Philadelphia
The design team is back at work on the expansion and renovation of the Central Library on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Kelly/Maiello is working with Francis Cauffman and Moshe Safdie Associates on the project.

Kelly/Maiello congratulates Christopher Deemer, an intern with us since October 2005. He has received his Bachelor of Architecture Degree from Drexel University and leaves us in July to begin the next step in his career. We wish Chris luck in his future endeavors, we will miss him.
 
High School Intern
Natasha Trice, a graduating senior at Friends Select School, was an intern at Kelly/Maiello for two weeks in June. Robert Glick RA, LEED AP, was Natasha’s mentor. Kelly/Maiello, a minority-owned business, often provides internship opportunities for college and high school students who have an interest in Architecture and Design

Kelly/Maiello congratulates Victor Guarino on passing The Architectural Registration Examination, now making him a registered Architect in Pennsylvania.

Kelly/Maiello congratulates Robert Glick, RA and Michael Wittich, AIA for passing the LEED Certification exam and becoming LEED certified architects. This accreditation is not only a major achievement for the two architects, but also broadens Kelly/Maiello’s level of involvement in Green and Sustainable Architecture. Kelly/Maiello is also a member of the U.S Green Building Council.

Kathryn Babcock, RA recently completed a course in Application and Finishing Techniques using JAHN Restoration Morters. This course adds to Kathryn’s already extensive background in Historic Preservation.

The Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building
The Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building, once the Reliance Insurance Company building, and now the new gallery and administrative space for the Philadelphia Museum of Art has received the Construction Excellence Award for the Best Historic Preservation Project from the General Building and Contractors Association. Kelly/Maiello was responsible for exterior restoration of the Perelman Gallery.
 
The Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection Opening
Emanuel Kelly, FAIA was on hand to celebrate the opening of the new and larger gallery containing the Charles L Blockson Afro- American Collection in Sullivan Hall at Temple University on March 11, 2008. Kelly/Maiello is responsible for the programing, planning, schematic design and design development for the new gallery that houses an extensive  collection of African American art work, as well as writings from many influential African American leaders. The Bank of America Big Cat Falls Exhibit
The Bank of America Big Cat Falls exhibit at the Philadelphia Zoo received the 2007 Exhibit of the Year Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Kelly/Maiello was the Associate Architect for the project
